Tenses is a change in the form of a verb to express an action that is influenced by time. Tense has 16 kinds. Even though there are many, tenses are one of the basic grammar in English which is often used in speaking. Here are the characteristics of each tenses.


 1. Simple Present Tense

 The most commonly used tense form. The simple present tense is used to express facts, or to tell events that are happening in the present.

 Formula:

 Subject+Verb 1 (present form)

 Example:

 2. Present Continuous Tense

 To tell the events that are taking place while speaking. This tense can also be used to talk about future plans. The description of time that is widely used in this tense is "now".

 Formula:

 Subject+ am/is/are+ Verb -ing (Continuous Form)

 3. Present Perfect Tense

 To tell an event that is happening or has just finished. This tense tends to put emphasis on the impact of an action that occurred, and can still be felt today

 Subject+ has/have+ Verb 3 (Past participle form)

 4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense

 To tell an action that was completed in the past and is still continuing today.

 Formula:

 Subject+ has/have+ been+ Verb -ing (Continuous form)

 5. Simple Past Tense

 To tell an incident in the past. Adverbs of time commonly used in this tense are Yesterday, two power ago, and so on.

 Formula:

 Subject+ Verb 2 (Past form)

 6. Past Continuous Tense

 To tell an incident that was happening in the past. However, not only one, this tense can also be used to tell two events that were happening in the past.

 Formula:

 Subject+ was/were+ Verb -ing (Continuous form)

 7. Past Perfect Tense

 To express an event that happened before a certain time in the past. Put more emphasis on the fact that something has happened and not on duration.

 Formula:

 Subject+ had+ Verb 3 (Past participle form)

 8. Past Perfect Continuous Tense

 This tense is used to tell about events that happened in the past and were completed at a certain point in time in the past. Put more emphasis on the duration of something.

 9. Simple Future Tense

 It is used to tell about events that will happen in the future. This tense can also be used to tell spontaneous future decisions.

 Formula:

 Subject+ will/be going to+ Verb 1 (present form)

 10. Future Continuous Tense

 To tell an event that will definitely happen in the near future.

 Formula:

 Subject+ will+ be+ Verb -ing (Continuous form)

 11. Future Perfect Tense

 The use of this future perfect tense is a word form to show one's will related to the future

 Formula:

 Subject+ will have+ Verb 3 (Past participle form)

 12. Future Perfect Continuous Tense

 It is used to express a description of an action that will continue until a certain point in the future.

 Formula:

 Subject + will + have + been + Verb -ing

 13. Simple Past Future Tense

 To state actions to be taken, to make predictions, to make promises in the future while in the past.

 Formula:

   • Subject + would + Bare Infinitive

 • Subject + was/were + going to + Bare Infinitive

 14. Past Future Continuous Tense

 The function of this tense is to show an event that will happen in the past. However, the events in the story cannot become real due to one reason or another that happened in the past.

 Formula:

 Subject + would + be + Verb -ing

 15. Past Future Perfect Tense

 To indicate an activity that should have been completed in the past.

 Formula:

 Subject + would + have + Verb 3

 16. Past Future Perfect Continuous Tense

 Used to describe things or activities that will be, are being, and have been done in the past. Shaped assumptions or mere supposition.

 Formula:

 Subject + would + have been + Verb -ing

 Well, those are the characteristics of each type of tense. To learn tenses, we only need to understand the meaning of each tense and memorize the formula for each tense.
